jan 1, 1804 - 1804-1806 : The Lewis & Clark Expedition ---- President Jefferson sent Lewis to explore the newly purchased Louisiana territory. Lewis and Clark were helped by a French trapper and his Indian wife Sacagawea who acted as interpreters.
