jan 1, 1940 - Lehi

Description:

Lehi breaks from the Irgun in 1940 when Avraham Stern refuses to suspend the fight against Britain for the duration of the war, holding that British rule is the primary obstacle to a Jewish state regardless of events in Europe. It is the smallest and most radical of the underground groups, numbering only a few hundred, and it operates by assassination and sabotage, at one point seeking an alliance with the Axis powers against Britain — a proposal that isolates it completely. Its most consequential acts are the killing of Lord Moyne in Cairo in 1944 and the assassination of the UN mediator Folke Bernadotte in 1948, the latter carried out after the state's establishment and against its authority. Stern is killed by British police in 1942, the organization is forcibly disbanded after the Bernadotte killing, and one of its three commanders, Yitzhak Shamir, later becomes prime minister.
