jan 1, 1 - Theodotus Inscription

Description:

A Greek dedication stone found in the City of David records that Theodotus, priest and synagogue head, built a synagogue for the reading of the Torah and teaching of the commandments, along with lodging and water installations for visitors from abroad. It names three generations of synagogue leaders in his family. Dating before 70 CE, it establishes that synagogues functioned in Jerusalem alongside the Temple rather than replacing it after its destruction. It also documents organized provision for Diaspora pilgrims.
