apr 30, 1949 - Prutah Series
Description:
The first full Israeli coin series, in denominations from one to 250 pruta, was designed largely by Otte Wallish, and every motif was taken from ancient Jewish coins: the grape cluster and lyre from Bar Kokhba issues, the three palm branches of the 250 pruta from Great Revolt coinage, the anchor from the Hasmoneans. The choice was a conscious statement that the new state was resuming an interrupted sovereignty rather than beginning something new, and it established the design principle that Israeli coinage has followed ever since.
