The first full Israeli coin series, in denominations from one to 250 pruta, was designed largely by Otte Wallish, and every motif was taken from ancient Jewish coins: the grape cluster and lyre from Bar Kokhba issues, the three palm branches of the 250 pruta from Great Revolt coinage, the anchor from the Hasmoneans. The choice was a conscious statement that the new state was resuming an interrupted sovereignty rather than beginning something new, and it established the design principle that Israeli coinage has followed ever since.Added to timeline:
