The lira was re-divided from 1000 prutot into 100 agorot, a decimal simplification. The name agora was chosen by the Academy of the Hebrew Language from the book of First Samuel, where it refers to a small piece of silver, continuing the practice of reviving biblical monetary vocabulary for modern use.
