jan 1, 1980 - Israeli Sheqel

Description:

A law of the 1960s had required the Hebrew name sheqel to replace the foreign word lira, and it finally took effect in February 1980 at a rate of one sheqel to ten lirot. The change was as much linguistic and national as economic, completing the Hebraisation of the currency. It arrived just as inflation was accelerating, and the sheqel itself would last only five years.
