A library of clay tablets uncovered at Ras Shamra on the Syrian coast from 1929 onward, written in Ugaritic, a Northwest Semitic language closely related to Hebrew. They preserve the Canaanite myths of El, Baal, Anat, and Asherah, along with temple rituals, letters, and administrative records. Their importance for the study of Israel is enormous: they explain the vocabulary and poetic parallelism of biblical Hebrew poetry, and they reveal exactly which Canaanite religious ideas the prophets were arguing against. Ugarit also used one of the earliest alphabetic scripts, written in cuneiform signs.
