Description:

Rav established an academy at Sura in Babylonia after returning from studying with Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi in the land of Israel. Together with Pumbedita it became one of the twin centers that produced the Babylonian Talmud and later the Geonic responsa. Sura drew thousands of students during the semi-annual kallah gatherings when working men assembled to study. Its authority extended across the Jewish world for roughly eight centuries.
