Around 425 CE, the Jewish Patriarchate in the Land of Israel came to an end after centuries of leadership by the Nasi, traditionally associated with the house of Hillel. Its disappearance marked the collapse of one of the last major institutions of Jewish communal authority in Roman and Byzantine Palestine, as the center of Jewish scholarship and leadership increasingly shifted toward Babylonia.
