jan 1, 853 BC - Battle of Qarqar
Description:
King Ahab of Israel joined a coalition of Levantine kingdoms led by Damascus and Hamath to resist the westward expansion of the Neo-Assyrian king Shalmaneser III. The armies fought at Qarqar in Syria, and although Shalmaneser claimed victory, the coalition appears to have temporarily halted the Assyrian advance. The battle is recorded on the Kurkh Monolith, which names Ahab and provides one of the most important extra-biblical references to the Kingdom of Israel.
