His parents, Nicolas-Auguste Verlaine, an army captain (born in Bertix, Belgium) and Élisa-Stéphanie Dehée, a farmer's daughter, were married for thirteen years, keeping their Catholic faith close to their hearts. Dehée miscarried thrice prior to the birth of Paul Marie, whom they baptised and gave the middle name Marie out of gratitude to the Virgin Mary. Even though he was the couple's only biological child, he had an elder stepsister (his orphaned cousin) who was adopted in 1836.
