mar 3, 1820 - Missouri Compromise/Compromise of 1820
Description:
When Missouri applied to be a state in the Union, it upset the balance of slave states and free states in Congress. As a compromise between the North and the South to let both Missouri and Maine join the Union, it was decided that any part of the Louisiana Purchase territory north of the southern border of Missouri would be admitted as a free state.
