Description:

Led by Datis and Artaphernes, the forces of the Persians were directly confronted in Marathon by the Athenian Army before they could set sail around Cape Sounion to land closer to Athens and attack it by sea.

The Athenian Army, led my Miltiades, stretched out there phalanxes, reducing them to 4 rows instead of the usual 8 in the center and focusing all their manpower to the flanks.
The plan was to hit the weaker Persian flanks who concentrate their power on the center.

After getting defeated, the Persians still set sail and tried executing their original plan to land in Phaleron with reduced numbers. The Athenians immediately marched back to Athens were they arrived in time and would fight the Persians off for good.
