After Mormon had retrieved the Plates of Nephi the Lamanites again won the advantage and the Nephites were driven before them. Eventually they retreated to the land of Shem, which seems to be far in the north. There Mormon caused the people to fortify the land as well as bring in as many of the people as possible that they might be protected.
