jan 1, 1850 - Fugitive Slave Act

Description:

The fugitive slave act required northeners to assist slave catchers. Abolitionists in the north hated this and it continued to further divide the country. This led to the civil war because the north obviously did not want to catch the people that they were already helping to escape.
