A compromise by Henry Clay. After Texas was annexed into the United States, the slavery controversy grew in the Senate. The Compromise of 1850 would be the last piece of legislation to ease tensions between the North and the South. It composed of five points:

1) Federal assumption of Texas Debt
2) Stronger fugitive slave law
3) Ban slave trade in Washington D.C.
4) Admit California as a free state
5) Let settlers in New Mexico and Utah territories decide to whether be a free state or a slave state
