-Korea divided into 2 zones (border: 38th parallel, as suggested at Potsdam)

-US zone of control: south (containing capital Seoul, 35 miles south of border)

-Soviet zone: north

-split intended to be temporary (as will Vietnam + Germany)

-Japan later became a capitalist base (for USA) in southeast Asia
