1652: Cape Town (now capital of South Africa) is founded by the Dutch. 1799: French soldiers in Egypt uncover the Rosetta Stone, which enabled experts to understand the Ancient Egyptian language for the first time. 1672: The Royal African Company is set up in London to trade goods with Africa and buy African slaves. 1780: Slave trade reaches its peak. Most slave traders are British. 1884: Major European powers met at the Berlin Conference to discuss dividing Africa between them, without consulting African leaders. 1776: US becomes a country. 1867: Canada becomes a country. 1661: First Qing emperor dies. 1722: Kangxi becomes emperor. He rules for 61 years. During his reign, arts flourish. 1807: Britain bans the practice of keeping slaves. This doesn't include its colonies. 1868: Meiji Restoration, which meant Japan closed itself off from other countries, similar to China in late Ming and Qing dynasties. 1769: James Watt's improved steam engine was patented. This was a key to starting the Industrial Revolution. 1882: British naturalist, Charles Darwin who first proposed the ide,a of evolution dies. 1894- First Sino-Japanese War. When Japan and China sent troops to calm a Korean uprising, they began fighting among themselves. 1871: Italy united, as French troops withdrew from the Rome Republic. 1837: Queen Victoria becomes queen at the age of 18. She would end up having the second longest reign in British history. 1832: Greece breaks away from the Ottoman Empire. 1846: A religious group called the Mormons, found the city of Salt Lake City, capital of the state Utah, after facing persecution from their homeland of Ilinois. 1644: Qing Dynasty founded. 1793: King of France executed. 1848: Californian Gold Rush begins.
