The Roman Empire in Western Europe collapses; start of the medieval period. Charlemagne, king of the Franks, is crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Charlemagne dies Edward the Confessor becomes king of England. The Black Death breaks out in Sicily and quickly spreads across Europe, killing between 50-90% of those who catch it. The First Crusades begins. The Crusades continue for the next 175 years. The Magna Carta, the first ever document outlining the rights of the English people, is drawn up and King John is forced to give it his royal seal. Johannes Gutenberg invents the printing press in Germany A militant Islamic group, the Seljuk Turks, take control of Jerusalem The King of England, Edward the Confessor, dies. Harold Godwinson declares himself king. William of Normandy invades England, defeats Harold at the Battle of Hastings and is crowned King William I of England. The Peasants Revolt takes place in England. Henry II becomes king of England. The Great Famine occurs in Europe. Start of the Hundred Years War between England and France. Muslim forces again capture Jerusalem providing a motive for the Third Crusade.
