A Soviet R-7 ICBM launched Sputnik, the worlds
first artificial satalite and man-made object to
orbit earth The Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the
first person to orbit Earth, traveling in Vostok I Americans started designing a smaller and
lighter spacecraft for project Mercury and tested
it with chimpanzees U.S astronaut Alan Shepard became the first
American in space(But not in orbit) Apollo suffered a setback when 3 astronauts
were killed after their spacecraft caught on fire
during a launch simulation Apollo 8 launched, it was the first manned space
mission to orbit the Moon U.S astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin,
and Michael Collins set off on the Apollo space
mission Apollo 11 successfully landed on the Moon and
Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on
the Moon's surface Periods
The U.S launched
their satelite,
Explorer 1,
designed by the
U.S army under
the direction of
Werhner Von Braun. U.S astronaut
John Glenn
became the
first American
to orbit the
Earth.
NASA placed
the foundations
of their lunar
landing program
called project
Apollo The joint Apollo-Soyuz mission sent three U.S
astronauts into space aboard an Apollo
spacecraft that docked in orbit with with a
Soviet-made Soyuz vehicle.
When the commanders of the 2 crafts officially
greeted, their "handshake in space" served to
symbolize the gradual improvement of U.S-
Soviet relations Yuri Gagarin was born in Klushino Russia on March 9 1934. He launched into space from the Baikonur launch site. He was the first man in space. He was the first man to orbit the Earth. He gave Russia the beginning
head start and lead in the space race. Yuri gave the world an open view of why we will continue to engineer new pathways into the future.
