A prosperous African nation; The Empire of Ghana grew from trade routes crossing through land occupied by the Soninke people. The Soninke used the term ghana to refer to their ruler. Traders also began using the term to refer to the region itself. By 700AD Ghana was a kingdom, thriving on the taxation of goods carried by traders.
