Half the Money from NZ exports came from gold from 1861-1870. The Gold rush was in the south island otago. Many people from Nz and other countries came to Otago e.g Chinese miners first worked in the Otago goldfields. Their number reached a peak of 4,200 in 1871.Added to timeline:
