Description:

A Babylonian Amora remembered for his strong sense of reverence before God. The Talmud says he would not walk four amot with his head uncovered, saying that the Divine Presence was above his head.

His practice became one of the classic rabbinic sources for the later Jewish custom of wearing a kippah. In his time, it was likely a special act of piety, but over the centuries it became a widespread Jewish symbol of humility, reverence, and identity.
