Mar Rab Hanan of Iskiya (jan 1, 540 – jan 1, 610)

Description:

Mar Rab Hanan of Iskiya is often placed at the beginning of the Geonic period. According to later tradition, the Geonic era begins around 589 CE, when he became Gaon of Pumbedita.

He represents the pre-transition from the Savoraim to the Geonim. His period marks the moment when the Babylonian academies became the central recognized authorities for Jewish law and learning.
