After nearly a year of Hezbollah rocket, missile, and drone attacks from Lebanon, Israel sharply expanded its campaign against the organization, targeting its command structure, weapons infrastructure, communications network, and senior leadership. A centerpiece of the campaign was the extraordinary pager and walkie-talkie operation, in which thousands of communications devices used by Hezbollah members exploded across Lebanon on September 17–18, throwing the organization into chaos and exposing a major intelligence penetration of its internal communications.
