XYZ Affair (jul 1, 1797 – jul 5, 1798)
Description:
A diplomatic crisis between the US and France. American diplomats were sent to France to negotiate issues that would prevent war from breaking out. They were approached by French officials that demanded bribes in order for the negotiations to begin. Though this was not uncommon at the time, the Americans were offended and refused to negotiate.
